LaunchDarkly flags and App Review

With percentage rollouts and targeting rules, two people can open the same build and see different apps. Here is how to make sure App Review sees the one you describe.

The reviewer lands in a bucket you didn’t choose

LaunchDarkly assigns rollout variations by hashing the context:

“When you set up a percentage rollout, each context receives a particular variation based on their context key.”

LaunchDarkly docs, Percentage rollouts

The review account’s context key decides what it sees. Unless you pin it, you can’t say for sure which variation the reviewer gets, so your notes can’t either.

Pin the review account with individual targeting

“The flag’s Targeting tab allows you to assign individual contexts to a particular flag variation, based on the context key.”

LaunchDarkly docs, Individual targeting

Target the demo account’s context key in your production environment with the variation you want reviewed, then write that state in the notes: “AI Coach: ON for the review account.” Keep the target until the review is finished.

Off still serves something

“The off variation represents the variation to serve if the feature flag targeting is turned off, meaning the on attribute is false.”

LaunchDarkly docs, Feature flags API

For a multivariate flag, “off” may still show a variant. Describe what the off variation does, not just that the flag is off.

Get the list from the flags API

LaunchDarkly’s Feature flags API returns each flag with per-environment configuration: individual targets, targeting rules, the default (fallthrough) rule and the off variation. Export the environment your App Store build uses. ReviewNotes reads LaunchDarkly-style JSON in your browser and sorts the flags into features, rollouts, experiments and debug switches.

What to write

LaunchDarkly section of the notes
REMOTELY CONFIGURED FEATURES (LaunchDarkly, production)
[Feature name] (flag: [flag-key])
What it does: [one specific sentence]
During review: ON for the review account
    (individually targeted)
How to reach it: [Tab] → [Screen] → [Button]

[Rollout feature] (flag: [rollout-key])
Percentage rollout; the review account is
  targeted to [variation].

“All new features, functionality, and product changes must be described with specificity in the Notes for Review section of App Store Connect (generic descriptions will be rejected) and accessible for review.”
